It was the last major battle in history fought exclusively with rowing vessels. The Holy League carried 30,000 sailors and oarsmen, 35,000 soldiers, 206 Galleys, and 6 Galleasses, whilst the Ottoman and Maghrebi Fleet carried 37,000 sailors and oarsmen, 30,000 soldiers, 222 Galleys, and 56 Galliots and Fuste. At the Battle of Lepanto, the Holy League lost 13 Galleys, and between 7,500 and 10,000 men were killed. The Ottoman and Maghrebi Fleet had 50 Galleys and Galliots sunk or destroyed, 117 Galleys and 20 Galliots captured, and between 25,000 and 30,000 men killed.
The composition of the Ex-Voto painting shows on the top part, the Virgin Mary and Child, flanked by St. John the Baptist, the patron Saint of the Order, on the left-hand side, and St. Lucia on the right-hand side. The Baptist's staff points towards the Christian fleet, whilst St. Lucia points the blade of her martyrdom towards the Ottoman fleet. These lead the viewer's eye towards the bottom panel of the painting. The Christian fleet on the left, consisted of many nationalities: Spanish, Neapolitan, Sicilian, Sardinian, Papal, Venetian, Genoese, Savoyard, Tuscan, Greek rebels and Maltese. In the centre left, one can see three galleys of Malta: the Santa Maria della Vittoria, San Giovanni, and San Pietro. At the extreme left, are the bulk of Papal and Imperial galleys, including the Capitana of Pope Pius V, and La Real, flagship of the Commander-in-Chief, Don Juan of Austria. Behind the royal squadron on the Christian side is a sword-wielding angel, symbolising that God is with the Christians. Across from them are Ottoman ships and galleys from the Maghreb. On them are ethnically Greek, Ottoman, and Arab men, but also North African corsairs and European renegades. The Ottoman fleet is depicted as spurred into action by a company of demons.
At the lowest part of the composition, on the foreground kneels the donor of the painting, a Knight of the Order of St. John, presumably one who fought in the battle and was wounded, possibly on the galley San Pietro. His coat-of-arms is found at the bottom right, but is unfortunately partly lost. The presence of Santa Lucia in this painting, may symbolise the donor's wounds in his eyes or throat during battle.
The message of the painting leaves no question as to the power of the prerogative of faith in late 16th century life.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/176/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Incontro della nave S.Cata e S.Croce nelle Acue D Orano li 7 Settembre 1708 con una squadra di sette vascelli DAlgier Il Capi il Com Fra Giusepe de Langou</schema:name><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/228/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Captain Pietro Zelalich's Capture of Tunisian Corsairs on 18 July 1765</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1765</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:description>Pietro de Giovanni Zelalich (1731-1811, from Kotor, Montenegro) arrived in Malta as a mutinous slave on the Corona Ottomana in 1760 and became an active corsair in Malta. </schema:description><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/229/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Portrait of Emmanuele Vitale</schema:name><schema:description>Notary Emanuele Vitale (1758-1802) was one of the Maltese leaders of the National Assembly. The painting depicts the Virgin and Child atop clouds which open up behind them into a golden-coloured heavenly realm. Below them on either side, forming a harmonious and stable pyramidal composition typical of the Renaissance and Baroque eras in art, are St John the Baptist on the left and St Francis on the right. St John is recognisable by his iconographic attributes, namely the lamb, his animal skin vestment, and his staff with a banner which in Latin reads 'ECCE AGNUS DEI,' meaning 'Behold the Lamb of God.' Behind St John is an angel who holds the Flag of St John the Baptist depicting a white cross on a red background. This flag was used by the Order of St John. St Francis is recognisable from his brown tunic, the rope as a belt, the rosary beads, and the book and white lilies at his feet signifying his devotion towards the Virgin Mary. Behind him, an intermediate to the saint and the Virgin and Child, is a half length figure of St Dominic, iconographically recognisable from his white and blue vestments and the flame on top of his head. Curiously, the flame replaces the usual red star. He is also winged, which is not his usual iconography. He gazes out towards the viewer and gestures towards the Virgin and Child as an invitation to participate in the scene. Below the Madonna and behind the figures is a seascape.

The painting is framed in a wooden gilt frame.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/474/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Portrait of Colonel Juan Baptista Azopardo</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>2000</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:description>This painting portrays the 'Coronel de Marina', Juan Bautista Azopardo, at bust-length, slightly turned, yet he still maintains a direct gaze at the beholder. He is set against a plain, brown-coloured background, with light being concentrated behind his figure, but then receeding to a darker colour towards the corners. In the portrait, Azopardo is wearing his uniform.

Juan Bautista Azopardo was born in Senglea Malta. From a young age, he had shown interest in naval architecture, and eventually, he went to study at Toulon through Grand Master Emmanuel Marie des Neiges de Rohan- Polduc (1725-1797). He served in both the French and British fleets. By the end of the 18th century, he acquired commissioned rank in the French Navy and travelled to Latin America and the Caribbean taking part in several battles. He arrived in Buenos Aires for the first time in 1799. After the Battle of Trafalgar, the British launched their first attack on Buenos Aires in 1806. Azopardo fought along the patriotic forces to ward off the invaders. The British launched the second invasion a year later, and after his heroism he was promoted to the rank of Lt Colonel of the Urban Militia of Buenos Aires on the suggestion of Viceroy de Liniers. In 1810, Juan Bautista Azopardo joined the revolutionaries for the May Revolution and was enrolled in the Corps of Gredaniers to assist in the acquisition of Independence. He was the founder of the Argentinian Navy after organizing the first naval squadron. The Argentinian Navy suffered from a defeat against the Spanish Fleet and Azopardo was imprisoned. In 1820, he was liberated and returned back to Argentina. He was celebrated as a great hero and was appointed Harbour Master and in 1824 he became the Navy’s Colonel.

The Marine painter van Beecq (1638-1722) was born at Amsterdam. His earliest known works date from the 1670s and represent English subjects. He specialised in the reprersentation of maritime scenes and ship portraits. There is another painting of the 'Royal Prince' by the same artist at the Royal Museum of Greenwich. The Greenwich painting is signed and dated 1679 by the artist. The Malta version is described as "sketchy" and according to the Royal Museum of Greenwich and a note written by Antonio Espinosa Rodriguez (found in the artefact's Inventory Card), it was purchased from a local collector, Paul Bellanti, nephew of the painter Michele Bellanti, in 1929. This painting has featured in important academic sources such as July 1932 Issue of THE MARINER'S MIRROR and in the Dictionary of Sea Painters by E.H.H. It is not signed or dated. The work depicts the tower clock of the Ex-Royal Naval Bakery (nowadays the Malta Maritime Museum) in Birgu. The Naval Bakery always had a monumental prescence in the context of the Birgu waterfront. Sir William Scamp’s (1801-1872) use of certain architectural features, such as the recurring balustrade and the clock bell tower, shows his knowledge of other waterfronts and naval architecture found globally. For example, the bell tower is very similar to the use of a pair of towers at the Naval Storehouse of HMD Bermuda, which were constructed after that found in Birgu.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/626/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Portrait of Captain General of the Galleys Paul de Suffren</schema:name><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:description>This late eighteenth century, oil-on-canvas painting portrays the Knight Paul-Julien de Suffren (1730-1809) in a gilded frame. The middle-aged man depicted in a three-quarter profile view maintains a direct gaze at the beholder. His figure is set against a dark background except for the left side of the painting, where, in a narrow, arched, window-like opening we can see the calm sea with no land in sight, and a two-masted ship with its sails unopened and the flags of the Order of Malta. The sea is calm but the sky has dark clouds gathering.

Captain de Suffren is wearing an elaborate breastplate with the eight-pointed Cross of the Order of Malta and a fine shirt underneath. His posture, clothing and facial expression radiate dignity and contentment. His left hand shown in the foreground adds to the impression of a well-groomed man. The painter’s palette with its greens, blues, dark red and pale gold adds to the mellowness of the work.

Similarly to his brother, Fra Pierre-André de Suffren, both from Saint-Tropez, Fra Paul-Julien de Suffren joined the Order of Malta in 1748. Of the two, he stayed longer on the island, and became the Captain of the Order’s Galley. His numerous victories included the attack on the town of Bizerta (in present-day Tunisia). He was in Malta when the French forces were expelled. He never joined Napoleon’s Fleet. Later, other family members also joined the Order.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/627/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Portrait of the Frejgatina 'Ardita'</schema:name><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:description>A portrait of a small boat (frejgatina) with two sails. Zammit is depicted on the foreground of the picture plane, seated on a red armchair, resting his right hand on a table covered with a decorative green cloth. Next to his hand, there is a book, referring to his academic background. The background receeds into a dark colour and a dark red curtain is draped on the left side of the portrait, adding an element of depth in the painting, contrasting with the empty background. In his left hand, he holds a wooden walking cane. The sitter’s frontal gaze is directed towards the viewer. The artist managed to capture Zammit’s prominence with great dignity. The painting is painted in great meticulous detail. Light from the right-side bathes Zammit’s face, creating a play with light and shade, highlighting his facial features, giving this portrait its realist nature. Zammit was involved in the construction of Albert Town, Marsa. This town was planned to serve as a residency area for new inhabitants which moved to the harbour area for job opportunities. He was also responsible for commissioning the construction of a small church in this new town, dedicated to Our Lady of Divine Grace. The church was completed by 1870, built in the Baroque revivalist manner, a style which was popularized in Malta from the late 1860s. Eventually, this church came to be known as ‘Ta’ Ċejlu’, after the benefactor himself. After WWII, this church had MV Pampas’ bell, one of the vessels involved on the MW10.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/631/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Port di Saint Tropez </schema:name><schema:creator>Jacques Gatti</schema:creator><schema:creator>Jacques Gatti</schema:creator><schema:description>A probably twentieth-century, impressionistic rendering of the Mediterranean seaport of Saint Tropez, focusing on the boats, their unopened sails and their reflections in the water in the foreground, while in the background we see the sand-coloured buildings surrounding the port and their rooftops. The artist's pastel palette with tiny patches of turquoise, magenta and dark red creates a serene atmosphere. The name of the largest boat in the foreground, Toulon, refers to the scene being located in France.

The painting is signed by Jacques Gatti, an Algerian artist, whose roots tie him to the sun-kissed, arid landscapes of North Africa. Later in life, he moved to the South of France, popular with artists seeking its strong, revealing lights and vivid colours.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/632/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Painting of an Order's Naval Encounter off Alexandria</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>ca. 1644</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:creator>Anonymous</schema:creator><schema:artForm>Art / Paintings</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.heritagemalta.mt/objects/634/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6053/full</schema:image><schema:name>Portrait of Capt.
