It was the last major battle in history fought exclusively with rowing vessels. The Holy League carried 30,000 sailors and oarsmen, 35,000 soldiers, 206 Galleys, and 6 Galleasses, whilst the Ottoman and Maghrebi Fleet carried 37,000 sailors and oarsmen, 30,000 soldiers, 222 Galleys, and 56 Galliots and Fuste. At the Battle of Lepanto, the Holy League lost 13 Galleys, and between 7,500 and 10,000 men were killed. The Ottoman and Maghrebi Fleet had 50 Galleys and Galliots sunk or destroyed, 117 Galleys and 20 Galliots captured, and between 25,000 and 30,000 men killed.
The composition of the Ex-Voto painting shows on the top part, the Virgin Mary and Child, flanked by St. John the Baptist, the patron Saint of the Order, on the left-hand side, and St. Lucia on the right-hand side. The Baptist's staff points towards the Christian fleet, whilst St. Lucia points the blade of her martyrdom towards the Ottoman fleet. These lead the viewer's eye towards the bottom panel of the painting. The Christian fleet on the left, consisted of many nationalities: Spanish, Neapolitan, Sicilian, Sardinian, Papal, Venetian, Genoese, Savoyard, Tuscan, Greek rebels and Maltese. In the centre left, one can see three galleys of Malta: the Santa Maria della Vittoria, San Giovanni, and San Pietro. At the extreme left, are the bulk of Papal and Imperial galleys, including the Capitana of Pope Pius V, and La Real, flagship of the Commander-in-Chief, Don Juan of Austria. Behind the royal squadron on the Christian side is a sword-wielding angel, symbolising that God is with the Christians. Across from them are Ottoman ships and galleys from the Maghreb. On them are ethnically Greek, Ottoman, and Arab men, but also North African corsairs and European renegades. The Ottoman fleet is depicted as spurred into action by a company of demons.
At the lowest part of the composition, on the foreground kneels the donor of the painting, a Knight of the Order of St. John, presumably one who fought in the battle and was wounded, possibly on the galley San Pietro. His coat-of-arms is found at the bottom right, but is unfortunately partly lost. The presence of Santa Lucia in this painting, may symbolise the donor's wounds in his eyes or throat during battle.

St John is recognisable by his iconographic attributes, namely the lamb, his animal skin vestment, and his staff with a banner which in Latin reads 'ECCE AGNUS DEI,' meaning 'Behold the Lamb of God.' Behind St John is an angel who holds the Flag of St John the Baptist depicting a white cross on a red background. This flag was used by the Order of St John. St Francis is recognisable from his brown tunic, the rope as a belt, the rosary beads, and the book and white lilies at his feet signifying his devotion towards the Virgin Mary. Behind him, an intermediate to the saint and the Virgin and Child, is a half length figure of St Dominic, iconographically recognisable from his white and blue vestments and the flame on top of his head. Curiously, the flame replaces the usual red star. He is also winged, which is not his usual iconography. He gazes out towards the viewer and gestures towards the Virgin and Child as an invitation to participate in the scene. Below the Madonna and behind the figures is a seascape.

Juan Bautista Azopardo was born in Senglea Malta. From a young age, he had shown interest in naval architecture, and eventually, he went to study at Toulon through Grand Master Emmanuel Marie des Neiges de Rohan- Polduc (1725-1797). He served in both the French and British fleets. By the end of the 18th century, he acquired commissioned rank in the French Navy and travelled to Latin America and the Caribbean taking part in several battles. He arrived in Buenos Aires for the first time in 1799. After the Battle of Trafalgar, the British launched their first attack on Buenos Aires in 1806. Azopardo fought along the patriotic forces to ward off the invaders. The British launched the second invasion a year later, and after his heroism he was promoted to the rank of Lt Colonel of the Urban Militia of Buenos Aires on the suggestion of Viceroy de Liniers. In 1810, Juan Bautista Azopardo joined the revolutionaries for the May Revolution and was enrolled in the Corps of Gredaniers to assist in the acquisition of Independence. He was the founder of the Argentinian Navy after organizing the first naval squadron. The Argentinian Navy suffered from a defeat against the Spanish Fleet and Azopardo was imprisoned. In 1820, he was liberated and returned back to Argentina. He was celebrated as a great hero and was appointed Harbour Master and in 1824 he became the Navy’s Colonel.

Captain de Suffren is wearing an elaborate breastplate with the eight-pointed Cross of the Order of Malta and a fine shirt underneath. His posture, clothing and facial expression radiate dignity and contentment. His left hand shown in the foreground adds to the impression of a well-groomed man. The painter’s palette with its greens, blues, dark red and pale gold adds to the mellowness of the work.

Similarly to his brother, Fra Pierre-André de Suffren, both from Saint-Tropez, Fra Paul-Julien de Suffren joined the Order of Malta in 1748. Of the two, he stayed longer on the island, and became the Captain of the Order’s Galley. His numerous victories included the attack on the town of Bizerta (in present-day Tunisia). He was in Malta when the French forces were expelled. He never joined Napoleon’s Fleet. The church was completed by 1870, built in the Baroque revivalist manner, a style which was popularized in Malta from the late 1860s. Eventually, this church came to be known as ‘Ta’ Ċejlu’, after the benefactor himself.
