Its name (earlier: H.M.S Gerrans Bay and Lock Carron) was changed to H.M.S Surprise when it became the Despatch Vessel (later: Flag Frigate) of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, most often stationed in Malta.
