DescriptionHMS Vanguard was a 74-gun ship-of-the-line of the Royal Navy. In December 1797, Viscount Horatio Nelson was appointed to take command of HMS Vanguard and despatched to the Mediterranean, commanding seven ships in pursuit of a French squadron intent on capturing Malta and Egypt.
