Classification(s)
Object TypeCrest Badge; Ship Badge
Registration NumberMMM 004011
DescriptionBadge of the Leader class destroyer HMS Douglas. The badge depicts a heart red framed and crowned gold. The ship was in Malta numerous times, namely in 1935 and in 1937. In 1940, Douglas was part of Force H, which left Gibraltar to serve as a distraction to the Italian naval forces in the Mediterranean, while convoys were escorted between Malta and Alexandria.

The badge is diamond-shaped with a gold rope twist border representing an auxiliary, and it is topped with a naval crown. At the top of the badge is the name of the Ship 'DOUGLAS.' The symbol of the heart derives from when the knight Sir James Douglas, in 1330, carried the heart of King Robert the Bruce to Jerusalem but was killed in Spain. He and the heart were returned to Scotland and buried.
