Rights and Reproductions

Heritage Malta is committed to making Malta’s rich cultural heritage accessible to all. As part of this mission, content from the national collection that can be downloaded from eMuseum is available for public use under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) licence.

By adopting this license, Heritage Malta seeks to encourage learning, creativity, and public engagement with Malta’s history and heritage. Researchers, educators, students, artists, and heritage enthusiasts are invited to explore and reuse our imagery responsibly, fostering a deeper appreciation of our collective past.

What does the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND licence mean?

This license enables users to copy and distribute the material in any medium or format in unadapted form only, for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to Heritage Malta. This applies to all images and texts on the Heritage Malta eMuseum website, unless it is a quote from another publication or noted otherwise that it originates from another source.

You are free to:

Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format.

Under the following terms:

Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests Heritage Malta endorses you or your use of the material.

Non Commercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes.

No Derivatives — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.

Can I use Heritage Malta's content and images in a creative project or research project?

Yes, all of the text that forms the catalogue entries and their associated images can be used freely according to the CC-BY-NC-ND licence, provided that you attribute Heritage Malta according to the Creative Commons licence above. However, please note that not all of the content on the Heritage Malta eMuseum website is owned exclusively by Heritage Malta. Some may have third-party intellectual property or image rights that Heritage Malta does not own. Please refer to the captions of each object for confirmation.

Can I download PDFs, interviews, or video clips of collection objects?

No, it is not possible to download PDFs, interviews, or other video or audio clips from eMuseum. You can, of course, link to these and use any of the catalogue data freely according to the CC-BY-NC-ND licence. If you would like to access these collection objects for offline use please contact us at the following email address: digitisation@gov.mt

How can I access higher resolution versions of images for my research, thesis, publication, or creative project?

High resolution images exist for all collection objects, but are not available through eMuseum.  For more information about accessing higher resolution versions of images in our digital collection, please contact us with an outline of your proposed use at the following email address: digitisation@gov.mt

Are some of these images public domain?

In the European Union, works such as photographs enter the public domain when their copyright expires, which is generally 70 years after the death of the creator. In the case of our photographic collections there are images which are in the public domain. When these objects are identified we update the Creative Commons licence of those images to a CC-BY attribution. This ensures that Heritage Malta is attributed as the custodian of the original image and that viewers know where to find the object in the national collection, but no further limitations are placed on the use of the media. This research is an ongoing task and therefore such attributions may not be up to date.

What is the resolution of the images I can download?

Images can be downloaded at 700px wide and range between 72 dpi and 300 dpi. To download these, click on the 'Download' link in a collection object record. Creative Commons statements are visible in full screen mode to the side of the ( i ) icon. The download icon is below this.
