DescriptionThis oil painting shows a large Galley of the Order of St. John ("Gran Galione" or "Capitana"), a highly ornamented multi-oared ship, with enormous sails. The sails were usually striped, with a large eight-pointed cross painted in the centre. It not only carried the artillery required, but was fully complemented with skilled men and knights. There is a missing oar to the right, the space was taken by a hen coop, the cook also worked from there.Dimensions97.8 x 73.3cm (framed); 85.6 x 62cm (unframed)
