DescriptionA probably twentieth-century, impressionistic rendering of the Mediterranean seaport of Saint Tropez, focusing on the boats, their unopened sails and their reflections in the water in the foreground, while in the background we see the sand-coloured buildings surrounding the port and their rooftops. The artist's pastel palette with tiny patches of turquoise, magenta and dark red creates a serene atmosphere. The name of the largest boat in the foreground, Toulon, refers to the scene being located in France. The painting is signed by Jacques Gatti, an Algerian artist, whose roots tie him to the sun-kissed, arid landscapes of North Africa. Later in life, he moved to the South of France, popular with artists seeking its strong, revealing lights and vivid colours.Technique
