Andrea Andreani

Andrea Andreani (1540–1623) was an Italian wood engraver and one of the earliest printmakers in Italy to employ chiaroscuro techniques, which involved using multiple colors. Born and mainly active in Mantua, he worked in Florence between 1584 and 1610 and died in Rome. His engravings, though rare and highly prized, are largely reproductions of works by Mantegna, Albrecht Dürer, Parmigianino, and Titian. Notable pieces include Mercury and Ignorance, The Deluge, Pharaoh’s Host Drowned in the Red Sea (after Titian), The Triumph of Caesar (after Mantegna), and Christ Retiring from the Judgment-Seat of Pilate (after a Giambologna relief).
