Adriaen van de VeldeDutch, 1636 - 1672

Adriaen van de Velde (baptized 30 November 1636 – 21 January 1672) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, and printmaker celebrated for his landscapes populated with animals and genre scenes. Born in Amsterdam into a family of artists, he trained with his father and later with landscape painters like Jan Wynants, developing a style marked by delicate compositions and masterful lighting. Van de Velde’s work spans pastoral views, Italianate landscapes, winter scenes, and biblical subjects, and he often added figures to other artists’ works. Despite his artistic success, he struggled financially and died deeply in debt.
