Cristoforo il Pomarancio Roncalli

Cristoforo Roncalli, known as il Pomarancio, born in the Tuscan town of Pomarance in 1552 and died in 1626, started his career in Florence and later became an acclaimed artist in Rome, the city which influenced him greatly and where he received a number of commissions. He retained the Florentine mannerist style and was later called to oversee decorative works happening on St Peter's Basilica. Roncalli's work was respected to the extent that he was given the highest designation an artist can achieve, the Cavaliere di Cristo title.
