DescriptionPhoto shows the damage suffered by this destroyer on 19 March 1943. On that day the "DERWENT" was hit by a circling aerial torpedo inside Tripoli harbour. The torpedo blew a 28' x 16' hole in the port side amidships, in the boiler-room. The destroyer was extensively damaged and immobilised. She was towed to Malta for emergency repairs, where stiffining was fixed across the hole made by the torpedo. "DERWENT" was towed to Britain by the tugboat "ALLEGIANCE" as part of convoy "MKS-18" during the early summer of 1943. Repairs were commenced at Devonport on 11 August 1943 but these progressed slowly and intermittently until stopped in January 1945. The destroyer was discarded as a total loss. Sold on 8 November 1946 and scrapped.Special CollectionMalta Drydocks Collection
