Francesco Solimena

Italian, 1657 - 1747
BiographyFrancesco Solimena (1657–1747) was a prolific Italian Baroque painter from a family of established artists. Early in his career, he was strongly influenced by Luca Giordano and Mattia Preti, developing a distinctive, dramatic approach to light and shadow. In his later work, he adopted a more restrained, classical style. As a teacher of many pupils, Solimena became one of the most influential figures in early 18th-century Neapolitan painting.
