Francesco Zahra
Maltese, 1710 - 1773
BiographyFrancesco Vincenzo Zahra, born in 1710 and died in 1773, was a Maltese painter who worked in the Neapolitan Baroque style due to influence from the art of Naples. He created many altarpieces, devotional pieces for private patrons, portraits, drawings, furniture and sculptures in marble. Although most of what we know about him is not for certain, he most likely received a very good education and began to paint at an early age. Zahra shows evident influence from his rival the French artist Antoine Favray and Italian Baroque artist Mattia Preti, both of whom resided in Malta.
