Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Guercino)

BiographyGiovanni Francesco Barbieri, better known as Guercino, was born in 1591 in Ferrara, Italy. Although he mainly taught himself, he apprenticed under the master Benedetto Gennari in Bologna and based his work highly on those of Carracci and Caravaggio. Guercino painted a number of varying subjects and was especially praised for his foreshortening technique. He moves his studio back to Bologna where he will die in 1666.
