Stefano Erardi
Maltese, 1630 - 1716
BiographyStefano Erardi was a Maltese painter whose artworks can be found in numerous churches across the Maltese Islands. He began his artistic career working in a somewhat outdated late Mannerist style, likely influenced by his study of paintings in Maltese churches and private collections. Erardi benefited from several opportunities that enabled his artistic abilities to develop, although he is not known to have studied abroad. The strong connections that the Order and the Church maintained with Sicily, Naples, and Rome contributed to a vibrant artistic environment, which played an important role in shaping Erardi’s artistic formation. While his style is often described as closer to a Classical Baroque, he was also influenced by the more tenebrist style of his contemporary Mattia Preti who dominated the artistic scene in Malta.
