Emvin Cremona

Maltese, 1919 - 1987
BiographyEmanuel Vincent "Emvin" Cremona (27 May 1919 – 29 January 1987) was a Maltese modernist artist and stamp designer, regarded as one of Malta’s foremost 20th-century painters and a key figure in introducing modernism to the island. From 1957 through the 1980s, he created the majority of Malta’s postage stamps, including the 1964 series marking the country’s independence from Britain.

Cremona trained at the Malta School of Arts and later at the Regia Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome. His works can be seen in several Maltese churches, such as those in Msida, Ħamrun, Paola’s Our Lady of Lourdes parish, Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary, and the chapel of Malta International Airport. Internationally, his paintings are also held at the World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
